December 4, 2007

Considering I was going to have three children surgically extracted from my uterus, I slept surprisingly well the night before my c-section. At around 5:30 am, I woke up to get freshened up. At around 6, nurses came by to do some last minute prep. And at 6:30, I walked down to the operating room.

Friends were there, family was there, but all I could think about was the babies. And how thirsty I was. Man, I was parched!

I hopped (ha!) on the operating table, and hunched over while the spinal block was placed. Ooooh, that was the worst! Definitely the worst part of the c-section. Ick. But once that was over, I was laid down on my back, and George was brought in.

Thank goodness we have video of everything from here on out, because I probably wouldn’t remember much of it otherwise. I was very out of it from the drugs and my exhaustion. And seriously, all I could think about was “I am sooooo thirsty.”

The surgery started, and 24 minutes later, I heard, “it’s a boy!” Linus was born. One minute later, “it’s another boy!” and Oliver was pulled out. And then, at 6:56, Miles was born. (“It’s another boy!”) They didn’t cry right away, but I was okay with that, since my doctor had prepared me for that.

A little while later, I did hear their little kitten-like mewls. The rest of the operation was a blur. They sewed me up, the boys were wheeled past me (sadly, I didn’t get to kiss them or see them up close) and everyone was informed of the sexes of the babies.

I was wheeled to recovery a little while later, where friends visited and I trembled. It freaked George out. heh. He edited the video to send out to friends and family, which you can see here. (Well, I fixed it up a little.)

The rest of the day, I was a bit out of it from the morphine pump and the magnesium sulfate I had to be on, so it’s definitely a blur. The NICU nurses brought pictures of the boys as well as updates. They were doing so well already, I was very happy about that. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to see them that day because of the mag sulfate. But honestly, with the amount of drugs in my system, I hardly noticed.

Yay, morphine! Heh.

Later, I’ll recap today…their birthday. Right now, the boys are napping. That’s their gift to mommy. :)

  • Wait. You were having triplets and you didn’t find out the sex of the babies? Or you just didn’t tell anyone else? That.is.impressive. We never find out, but we’ve been doing it one at a time. My rule is always that if there is ever more than one, we WILL know ahead of time. Go you!

  • Willa:

Pam, Congrats on a year well done! Actually and year and eight months! I got tears in my eyes watching the births. What an emotional trip!

  • Happy Birthday to the boys and congrats to mommy!

2 things surprised me about your post….

1- That it took them 24 minutes to get the first baby out. I think they had my first out in about 10 minutes.

2- That they didn’t bring the babies over to see you after they cleaned them up!

  • Sara:

    Happy Happy Birthday boys!!

  • Jen:

Happy Birthday! We don’t have any video or pictures from our delivery and watching your video brought tears to my eyes! And where was my morphine pump!? No fair! :-)

  • Paula:

Okay, I officially teared up when George said, “You did it!”

    Happy Birthday, cuties!

  • helen – i think maybe they started a little after 6:30. like, it was 6:30 when i got there, and it took a while to get the spinal. i think in the video we have of the c-section, the first baby comes about at 17 minutes from when george came in. so i guess still a bit longer than yours! and yes, i’m still sad i didn’t get to see them right away. i have no idea why.

the mommy – nope, we didn’t find out. we did know that they were all the same, though. my mom insisted one was going to be different. like she knows more than an u/s tech. hee hee!

  • I have tears in my eyes…b/c I know how special that moment was for you and on the eve on my boys turning 2…I’m super emotional. Happy first birthday Linus, Oliver and Miles!!!!!

  • That was such a cool video; totally made me cry!

I don’t have video or pictures of my surgery and I can’t remember much about it (except that I wanted it to be DONE:) so that was really cool to see. Happy Birthday to your three adorable blessings!!!

  • happy birthday linus, oliver & miles!!!

  • Happy birthday boys! I’m crying because I know how fast this went for your mommy and daddy and how, even though they are so happy to see you growing into handsome little boys, they really don’t want you to stop being babies too soon! No rush, ok?

    Happy Birthday!
